Can the shape of the wine glass make your wine taste better? I am not aware of a magic wine glass that can make "Two Buck Chuck" taste like a 1982 Chateau Margaux however the right wine glass can make your wine experience more enjoyable.
In order to get the most out of your wine it is necessary to consider a few points when selecting your stemware. There are many different types of wine glasses on the market ranging in style and quality. What you spend and how many styles you purchase is a personal decision but there are a few basic rules to consider.
Wine Glassware
Consider the material from which the glass is made. Select glassware that is plain and clear. Coloured or frosted glass or cut crystal will alter the way the wine looks in the glass and make it impossible to enjoy the true colour of the wine.
Wine Glass Size
Size matters. The bowl of the glass should be large enough to allow a fair measure to be poured and still have enough room for the wine to be gently swirled without spilling. This swirling action helps to aerate the wine while releasing the aromas.
Wine Glass Stem
The glass should have a stem. This allows the wine glass to be held without covering the bowl in fingerprints and also ensures that warmth from
the hand does not increase the temperature of the wine.
Wine Glass Shape
The shape of the bowl is of considerable importance. Choose a glass where the opening is smaller than the widest part of the bowl. This tapered shape serves to concentrate the aromas towards the nose.
Wine Glass Feel
Lastly, it is important to consider feel. How does the glass "feel" in your hand? Is it comfortable to hold when socializing in a stand up environment? I have encountered some stemmed glasses where the stem is so fine and the bowl so large it feels like it will break off in your hand. Whether you favour stemless glassware or the more traditional style it is safe to say that our choice in glassware is about as diversified as our choice in wine.
Morgans Restaurant and Wine Bar offers some of the finest wines with the perfect stemware. Have a look at our wine list and stop by for a tasting.
