Battling with YouTube Instruction

I have had many people come to me lately saying they go down the YouTube rabbit hole for their golf instruction. I’m not against it but you better know your swing and you better be aware of what is good and bad for you.

And most don't.

I tell the people I coach to tell me the tip before they try to implement it. Some of it is great for the student and most of it is irrelevant to them or it might make them worse.
Harvey Penick, the legendary instructor from Austin, Texas who taught Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite and is the author of the Little Red Book, once said he would never let other students watch lessons because what they talked about would not necessarily apply to them.

An example of this was a lesson I had recently where a man said, “I’ve been trying to get my elbow tucked into my side on the downswing for years and I can’t figure it out!” Meanwhile, the elbow was more than tucked. It was behind his body and could not hit anything besides a chunk or a hook.

In short, find a golf teaching professional you trust and talk to them about what you are hearing. It’ll help your golf game and I promise you your mind will be freer!
